Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin
These two "diketones," (or, group of chemicals) arose after the initial Diacetyl scare. Used as a flavoring substitute in e cig juice, they have still shown to be lung irritants as their chemical makeup is similar to Daicetyl.
Like Diacetyl, they are typically found in the sweeter, smoother and buttery flavored vape juices.
The jury is still out on their long term effects but it does appear that vape and e cig juice manufacturers are phasing them out.
Propylene Glycol and Glycerol - How is Vape Juice Made?
The majority of vaping liquid is made with a base of propylene glycol and glycerol. They absorb extra water and are the same compounds used in fog or smoke effects.
The FDA considers them "generally safe" and they're even used in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
However, when heated at high voltages, such as in vapes and e cigs, they have been shown to release hidden traces of formaldehyde into the vapor mixture. This, in turn, breaks down in the mouth, nose and lungs.
Formaldehyde is one of the main focuses on cigarette-related cancers. But due to conventional cigarettes containing over 8,000 chemicals, it's very hard to pinpoint whether formaldehyde is a direct cause of cancers.
So what do you do with all this info? The fundamental point is to read the labels and be an informed user.
