"You get what you pay for," they say. It might be the most presumptive and overused saying there is.
In reality, that saying is often untrue. Companies in countless industries put a markup on their products without giving you the quality to match. Anyone who's ever had a $20 sweater that held up better than a $100 one knows what we're talking about.
In many cases, that's the deal with premium e-juice too. It's not always worth the extra cash, and here's why.
So-called "premium e-juice" can cost several times as much as other products, but you often don't get what you pay for. To get to the bottom of this, let's take a look at the components of each bottle of vape juice.
As much as 95% of your vape juice is a base that's made of three ingredients. These base vape juice ingredients include vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), and nicotine.
For the most part, there isn't much quality variation among these ingredients. "Premium" versions of VG and PG don't exist, so you're getting a similar quality of base no matter how much you pay.
Keep in mind that your price could vary depending on the proportions in your base. For instance, a base with a higher percentage of nicotine will cost more. These varying levels are available at all price points, though,
The remaining 5% or more of your e-juice comes from the flavoring. This is one of the key places where your price difference comes in.
Some manufacturers import their flavorings from overseas. Other than the varieties from China, these imported e-juice flavorings tend to cost more. The same goes for flavorings that manufacturers make themselves.
Do these higher-priced flavorings taste better, though? Not necessarily. It's all about personal preferences. Some vapers have cheap e-juices that they enjoy just as much or more than "premium e-juices."
Some e-juice manufacturers inflate the price of their vape juices with high-end packaging.
The largest culprit is glass bottles. As you might expect, e-juices in glass bottles are pricier than those in plastic bottles.
Do you actually benefit from those glass bottles, though? Not really. Some manufacturers claim that the plastic can interfere with vape juice's flavor, but that's hotly debated.
The only known way glass bottles benefit you is if you choose to accelerate the steeping and curing process by warming your bottles. Manufacturers benefit, though, because glass bottles make e-juice "feel" more high-end so they can charge more.
When you put together all that information, you recognize that there are no predictable advantages to paying for a premium e juice. You don't know what you're getting, so you could be paying more for lower quality.
At the end of the day, it's about your tastes and preferences. Experiment with different brands and flavors to see what you enjoy and stick with them.
