RELX Technology Launches Lab to Study the Effects of Vaping
Chinese e-cigarette manufacturer RELX has announced the commencement of research in its bioscience laboratory to contribute to the global body of knowledge on the effects of vaping.
In a statement, the founder and CEO of RELX, Kate Wang, explained that the company has a responsibility to contribute to the scientific inquiry into the potential side effects of vaping.
“Science is the foundation of trust. As the industry leader, we have the responsibility to expand the borders of e-cigarette science and explore the unknown,” she said.
Although vaping is widely considered to be a safer alternative to smoking, scientists have highlighted the need for long-term studies to ascertain if there are any side-effects. RELX’s research will include both short-term and long-term studies, as well as in vivo and in vitro tests.
“E-cigarettes are sometimes viewed with suspicion because we have incomplete knowledge,” Yilong Wen, RELX co-founder and Head of Science, Research and Development and Supply Chain explained. “The RELX bioscience lab’s mission is to explore the unknown. We want to collect evidence through a scientific approach and strive to prove the potential for e-cigarettes to be less harmful, and in doing so, provide users the option to choose an alternative.”
RELX’s bioscience laboratory, which is based in the International Bioindustry Valley, Shenzhen, China, was launched in 2018. Currently, the lab is studying the impact of RELX products on the respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems of animals.
Xingtao Jiang, the head of RELX Lab, explained the importance of the study. “For example, does it affect the DNA or chromosomes, and what are the ingredients’ long-term impact on body organs and tissues? There is still a lot of research to be done,” Xingtao explained.
There have been a lot of studies into e-cigarette products and their effects on the body. Still, very few of these studies have involved industry players, so it is encouraging to see RELX championing a study on its own. Apart from the studies, it is conducting on its own, RELX is also collaborating with hospitals, scientific research institutions, and universities on different research projects. Some of the prestigious institutions that RELX is collaborating with include Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
RELX is one of the vaping brands that has not shunned from fulfilling its social responsibility. The company was one of the industry players who joined the debate about minors supposedly being attracted to vaping devices.
Johnathan Ng, RELX Global Head of External Affairs and the General Manager of the company’s operations in Indonesia, explained that RELX is looking at measures to prevent minors from being able to use its products. These measures include fitting RELX devices with facial recognition technology for age verification to prevent unauthorized persons from being able to use it. He also talked about plans to fit RELX devices with a remote locking function and give them neutral names.
RELX is one of the upcoming brands in the vaping industry. The company has some remarkable products to its name, such as the RELX Alpha, the RELX Classic Starter Kit, the RELX Essential, the RELX Nano, and the RELX Infinity.
While RELX deserves credit for choosing to conduct a study into vaping, this company is by no means the first to do this. Popular pod device brand Juul announced in 2019 that it is working with in-house and outside researchers to determine the effects of using its products.
The company presented a summary of the findings of its study at the annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco in 2019. The researchers compared a specific set of biological markers in people who quit smoking for five days and used nothing and people who quit and used the JUUL.
The researchers found that in people who switched the JUUL, the biological markers were consistent with those who quit and used nothing.
Kevin Burns, the CEO Of JUUL, expressed excitement about the findings and explained its implication. “The equivalent reductions in these specific cigarette-related biomarkers across the groups who abstained from smoking and those who used JUUL products reaffirms the role vapor products can have for the adult smoker,” he said. “We are committed to conducting rigorous, scientific research as we contribute to the ongoing dialogue regarding vapor products, and look forward to sharing additional research with the medical, scientific, and public health communities.”
We are excited to see vaping brands partnering with scientists to conduct research into vaping products. We believe working with the scientific and medical world is necessary to combat the skepticism associated with vaping in some circles.
