What Is E-Juice, Exactly? Here's What You Need to Know

If you're new to the world of vaping, you're probably getting used to the lingo you hear floating around. Maybe you've figured out that a mod is a device you vape out of.

You've heard terms like "e-juice" and "vape juice", but you aren't quite sure what that is.

It's the liquid you put in your device! Simple enough.

Of course, there is more to every story to be told.

What is e-juice? Everyone has been speaking of it as though it is some magic potion. Not quite.

Read on to find out all you need to know about e-juice.

What Is E-Juice?

The e-juice in your device does the job of the tobacco in the conventional cigarettes you used to smoke.

The e-juice, or e-liquid, is the liquid you place in your vape tank.

The atomizer in your device heats up the e-liquid to produce a vapor. This is what creates the sensation of smoking.

These e-liquids come in a variety of nicotine levels (some contain none!) and flavors. These choices will depend on your personal preferences.

What's Inside?

One of the most common questions surrounding e-liquids is what they are made of.

Unlike conventional cigarettes, which contain a long list of fillers and additives, e-liquids contain only a few ingredients.

A Diluent

The diluent is the substance used as the base of the liquid. It will make up about 80-90% of the entire e-juice.

The two most common diluents are propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers propylene glycol generally safe. It has been used in inhalers and other atomized medications since the 1950s.

This diluent is tasteless and odorless and produces a stronger throat hit compared to vegetable glycerin.

Vegetable glycerin is a much thicker substance and has a faint sweet flavor. This can mask the flavor, but vegetable glycerin doesn't produce a dry mouth feeling.

Suspended in the diluent is nicotine. Nicotine is the stimulant found in tobacco.

Depending on your tolerance and how long you've been smoking, you can find e-liquids with nicotine contents ranging from 0mg and up.

An average cigarette contains 18mg of nicotine.

You can find vape juices in almost any flavor. Cherry, sour apple, cotton candy, you name it!

If you are new to vaping, the choices may be overwhelming. Remember that you have time to try out all the flavors you want.

If you want a more traditional feel, e-liquids come in a variety of tobacco and menthol flavors.
